Did you know that around 25 per cent of children w Did you know that around 25 per cent of children with cancer live outside of the Melbourne and metropolitan area? To support these families, Koala Kids provides resources to nine regional Victorian hospitals that form part of the Regional Outreach Shared Care Program (ROSCP).

Whilst we mostly provide therapeutic items, fun activities and pantry staples to these hospitals, we were recently asked to provide 'febrile neutropenia backpacks' for children presenting at emergency departments. Because these hospitals mostly don't have a dedicated paediatric emergency department, the backpacks are used by healthcare workers as a quick 'grab and go' from the paediatric ward to the emergency department for children presenting with fever or neutropenia (low white blood cell count), both of which are common complications for children undergoing cancer treatment.

The backpacks contain all the supplies required to access a child’s central line, take bloods, collect urine and blood cultures and administer the initial dose of IVAB in each ED, which allows for fast treatment of these complications.

“The team is really appreciative of the backpacks. It’s been fantastic to hear that they’ve helped reduce the stress and anxiety around preparing for emergency access," said Imogen Riley, Paediatric Cancer Care Coordinator in Albury.
