Children in the Kookaburra ward enjoyed experimenting with watercolors when Kim Fleming was the guest illustrator at KOALA Kids book club last month.
“This morning we had five students engaged in a group learning session with Neridah (McMullen, KOALA Kids volunteer, Book Club coordinator), Kim and myself.
Kim read several of the books she has illustrated and then demonstrated some of the techniques she uses when working with watercolour paints to create her images. Students were provided opportunity to explore these techniques and then created their own paintings inspired by the themes in Kim’s books’. We had a beautiful KOALA Kids Book Club this morning with the children at MCCC.
With my able assistant, Toby McMullin, aged 10 years, we read several Christmas themed Picture Books to the children.
We loved Corinne Fenton’s ‘Hey Baby, it’s Christmas!’. With every page turned the children had to guess the name of the animal, which was great fun.
We also read ‘Deck the Shed with Bits of Wattle’ and sang along. We also enjoyed reading ’True Blue Santa’ by Anne Mangan, illustrated by Kim Fleming, ‘Little Dog and the Christmas Wish’ a new book from Corinne Fenton and Robin Cowcher and ‘The Smallest Christmas Gift’ by Peter H.Reynolds which was hilarious.
We were very busy and we all compiled our ‘Christmas Lists’ for Santa before we decorated fabulous plywood Christmas decorations of Santa, his reindeer and Christmas Angels.
Lucas, Ryan and Stanley also enjoyed making 3D felt Christmas Trees that then they all decorated.
Thank you so much for having us MCCC. Merry Christmas!’
