Mother’s Day Book Club in Monash’s Children Cancer Centre

We had a very special book club session on the 11th of May at KOALA Kids Book Club with Elizabeth, age 2 and Stefan, aged 7. It was a themed book club for Mother’s Day.

Elizabeth loved ‘My Mum’s the Best’ by Rosie Smith and Bruce Whatley and ‘Hey Mum, I Love you, by Corinne Fenton. Stefan enjoyed reading ‘Mummy’s Little Monster’ by Dawn McNiff & Kate Willis Crowley. He also loved the classic ‘Owl Babies’ by Martin Waddell and Patrick Benson. We also enjoyed ‘My Mum says the Strangest Things’ by Katrina Germein and Tom Jellett and ‘Little Penguin and his Mum’ by Matt Wolf. But by far Stefan’s favourite was ‘Mummy’s Little Monster’ which all made sense when we found out his favourite animals were snakes and sharks! When then did some beautiful artwork of portraits of the children’s Mum’s from the wonderful Five Mile Press Sketchpads. A beautiful morning was had by all.

MONASH TRIALS AYA CLINIC

kk2A huge thank you to KOALA Kids for providing yummy treats and amazing goodie bags to support the launch of our Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Clinic.

The launch night was the first opportunity for patients and families to come along and get a feel for how the clinics will run and to unveil our new adolescent space.

Thank you also for the wonderful DVD and magazine contributions to the AYA room. KOALA Kids support and contributions helped us provide a fun, relaxing and inviting environment for our patients. This night was the first of our six month pilot program to trial these AYA specific clinics so we are very excited for the ones to come!

Christmas Books at the Monash Children’s Cancer Centre!

Written by Neridah McMullin the KOALA Kids Book Club Co-ordinator

We had a beautiful KOALA Kids Book Club this morning with the children at MCCC.

With my able assistant, Toby McMullin, aged 10 years, we read several ChristHey-Baby-Its-Christmasmas themed Picture Books to the children.

We loved Corinne Fenton’s ‘Hey Baby, it’s Christmas!’. With every page turned the children had to guess the name of the animal, which was great fun.

deck-the-shed-with-bits-of-wattleWe also read ‘Deck the Shed with Bits of Wattle’ and sang along. We also  enjoyed reading ’True Blue Santa’ by Anne Mangan, illustrated by Kim Fleming, ‘Little Dog and the Christmas Wish’ a new book from Corinne Fenton and Robin Cowcher and ‘The Smallest Christmas Gift’ by Peter H.Reynolds which was hilarious.

We were very busy and we all compiled our ‘Christmas Lists’ for Santa before we decorated fabulous plywood Christmas decorations of Santa, his reindeer and Christmas Angels.

Lucas, Ryan and Stanley also enjoyed making 3D felt Christmas Trees that then they all decorated.

Thank you so much for having us MCCC. Merry Christmas!’
