IPADS FOR PETER MAC RADIOTHERAPY

Ask any child or young person what they would do to keep themselves entertained for around an hour and their immediate answer is usually Netflix or playing on an iPad!

Koala Kids has recently provided two iPads to the paediatric radiotherapy department at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for children and young people to use during radiotherapy. In order to lie perfectly still for their radiotherapy children under five years of age are usually anaesthetised every day.  Sadly, Peter Mac has recently experienced an increase in the number of children requiring two sessions of radiotherapy each day (morning and afternoon) meaning they cannot be anaesthetised.

The iPads, which have been loaded with Netflix allow children to choose movies and television shows to watch during treatment, hopefully keeping them perfectly still and allowing them to relax.

Thanks to two very generous benefactors, the brand-new iPads were donated to Koala Kids.

A COLOURFUL & HEALTHY ADDITION TO HOSPITAL KITCHENS

Having a beautiful dish of delicious fresh fruit is something most of us could often take for granted, however for families who spend days, weeks and even months in hospital, having fresh fruit available to select from is a luxury.

It’s usually impractical and almost impossible for parents to shop for fresh, healthy food before and during their child’s admission and if they have a day full of appointments and have forgotten to pack a snack for them and their child, it involves a costly trip to the hospital cafe.

With thanks to LaManna & Sons South Yarra, Koala Kids has begun providing a weekly delivery of fresh, seasonal fruit to the Children’s Cancer Centre at Monash Children’s Hospital and the ONTrac Adolescent and Young Adult Service at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. We are loving being able to add fresh fruit to the range of grocery items we already provide hospitals and is something we hope to expand to other hospitals in the future.

Feedback thus far has been wonderful with lots of comments on how bright and fresh the fruit is and its fabulous quality. As always, this program wouldn’t be possible without the support of a committed team of volunteers working behind the scenes every week – picking up the fruit from LaManna & Sons, dividing it up at the office and then delivering it to Monash and Peter Mac.

Family Zoom Workshops

From exploding volcanoes, juggling and Pilates to decorating Easter bonnets and baskets and a plethora of chocolate, Koala Kids Zoom workshops had it all over the past couple of months!

Bonnie from FizzKidz showed kids how to construct their own volcanoes before using science to explode them. Then the kids popped on their juggling hats and the Carnival for Kids team showed them how to not only make their own juggling balls but become a juggling master at the same time!

Parents and carers didn’t miss out on the fun either as Alannah Miller, Koala Kids volunteer and director of pilates at 2Good Physiotherapy hosted a Zoom pilates class one Saturday morning.  We are looking forward to Alannah and other Pilates instructors providing regular Pilates sessions in future.

Leading up to Easter kids created beautiful Easter bonnets and baskets at the Koala Kids craft workshop and at our Easter cooking workshop made and devoured delicious chocolate treats!

Koala Kids commenced Zoom workshops in mid-2020 as a response to the pandemic and our volunteers being unable to attend hospitals for in-hospital activities. The research that was conducted by independent  IMO analytics late last year with around 100 families revealed  families really enjoy our Zoom workshops and hoped they would continue after COVID. The virtual workshops are proving particularly beneficial for children and families in regional areas who don’t always come to Melbourne for treatment.  Without our activities these families miss the fun Koala Kids activities and the opportunity to connect with other families. As we slowly gravitate towards returning to hospital volunteering, we are also planning to continue Zoom workshops and run the two programs simultaneously.

Schools Program – April 2021

During Term 1, we’ve had the pleasure of Zach and Eden from Bialik College join us every Friday afternoon as part of the ETGAR Program. Etgar means “challenge” in hebrew and during each term in year eight and nine students are able to choose from either a variety of activities that help them develop their skills, interests and competencies in new and untested areas or can nominate to volunteer with or fundraise for a local not-for-profit organisation.

Zach and Eden provided a valuable contribution to Koala Kids and we’ve really enjoyed witnessing their passion and enthusiasm grow as they learned learn more about Koala Kids. Both students commented that their favourite task was packing craft kits for Monash Children’s Hospital enjoying seeing the range of items that went into the packs.

We’re looking forward to growing momentum once again with our schools program this year after it came to a standstill during 2020. Within the next few months we’ll be speaking at assemblies, hosting workshops and welcoming students from Genazzano FCJ College, Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School and Wesley College.

Suncorp Brighter Futures Partnership

Koala Kids is delighted to announce that we have been chosen as Suncorp Group’s local Victorian charity partner in the Brighter Futures program for the second consecutive year.

In addition to a large cash donation, we’ve enjoyed working with the Suncorp team on various fundraising initiatives and are hoping this year to be able to welcome members of their team to volunteer with us on a range of programs.

In addition to assisting with deliveries of meal boxes to families’ homes all over Melbourne during the lockdowns, the cyber safety team is presently conducting a review of our business.

Brighter Futures is Suncorp Group’s employee giving program that encourages employees to donate, fundraise and volunteer for causes that are important to them. Koala Kids was chosen after Suncorp Group conducted a survey which found that their Victorian employees wanted to support an organisation that helped children and families.

2021 #webelievehappyhelps Cocktail Party

We were very excited to welcome more than 180 guests to our TAKE TWO #webelievehappyhelps cocktail party earlier this month, having had to postpone the original event because it fell during Melbourne’s snap five-day lockdown in February.  Spirits were heightened and guests fed back that the party was our best yet!

The #webelievehappyhelps cocktail party usually coincides with International Childhood Cancer Day each year, around 15 February.  We enjoy recognizing the support provided by Koala Kids volunteers, corporate and program partners, hospitals, major donors, student ambassadors and friends of the Foundation.  This year provided a wonderful opportunity for us all to reconnect, many of us having only seen each other on Zoom since the last party just before lockdown in 2020.  Even though guests couldn’t meet at the ham table, there was an exciting and happy buzz in the air as the various people responsible for Koala Kids gingerbread, socks and family meals mingled with lunch hostesses, corporate partners, photographers and videographers.

More than 20 volunteers clad in Koala Kids t-shirts mixed and served Koala Kids traditional happy cocktail, Aperol Spritz and passed around baby ham rolls, chicken sandwiches and dumplings, COVID safely of course!

Amanda Mandie OAM Koala Kids voluntary executive director proudly explained to guests that despite the massive challenges faced by businesses globally during 2020, Koala Kids had proven its ability to “adapt to the changing landscape and subsequently enjoy a year where we strengthened our position as a major supporter of children and young people with cancer and increased the awareness for our services for families affected by paediatric cancer.”

Mandie referred to the findings of an independent survey conducted by IMO Analytics with 100 families with children with cancer late last year revealing Koala Kids net promoter score of 95 – proving families are extremely satisfied with Koala Kids support and in particular the programs and activities offered during the pandemic.

Annie Moulden, director of Koala Kids acknowledged the particularly generous and long-standing support of Koala Kids Foundation Partner Korjo Travel Goods, welcoming Ashley Kausman and Lisa Mann.  In a particularly tough year for the travel industry, Korjo’s support of Koala Kids hasn’t wavered.

Koala Kids would like to express warmest thanks to ULR Jaguar Land Rover for hosting the event again in the wonderful showroom space and for the team’s incredible support in the lead up to and during the night. Thank you to Treat Catering for providing delicious catering and Frog Hollow Estate some of the wines. Each year we are extremely fortunate that Purpose Group is able to provide pro bono AV support and Slide Productions fabulous furniture which fits so well with our Koala Kids orange! Thank you Tiger Corp and Simmons Linen Hire and each and every single one of the 22 volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure our guests enjoyed themselves.  A massive thank you to Michael Bottomer (Life through a Lens) and Kosta Pinirou who respectively photographed and recorded the event. We were extremely fortunate to secure the support of the very professional Ben McGinn to manage the bar service and Rhonda Kruize, Koala Kids events intern enjoyed her first real-life experience on the job and was a great assistance to Jess Bucci who executed another great event.

2020 Koala Kids Volunteers of the Year

Daniella Mandie and Daniel Lawson were announced Koala Kids 2020 Volunteers of the Year by outgoing winners Vanessa Cohen and Liz Anderson at Koala Kids cocktail party earlier this month.

Daniella (aka La) has been a Koala Kids ambassador since 2007 inviting friends to donate to Koala Kids in lieu of birthday gifts each year. As the daughter of Mandy and brother of Nick (co-founders of Koala Kids) La has risen out of the shadows for the past five-plus years making time to volunteer in the hospitals, the office, picking up parcels and dropping off consignments to and from the office and hospitals. During 2020, whilst Koala Kids temporary distribution centre was based in the Mandie home, La sprang into action helping out across the organisation.

Dan Lawson has volunteered with Koala Kids since 2016 and during that time has provided professional photography, videography and other support for Koala Kids young adults and other events. Only last December Dan captured the memories of Koala Kids lunches, driving between the 14 hostesses’ homes recording the beautiful table settings and happy lunch guests.

Prior to COVID-19 Dan was a regular volunteer at Koala Kids morning teas, pizza and pancake days and taught his juggling skills to young aspiring jugglers. Throughout 2020 delivered meal boxes to families’ even driving all the way to South Gippsland and Portsea without stopping in the height of the second lockdown.

KOALA KIDS RESEARCH REVEALS COVID-19 SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASES STRESS FOR FAMILIES

Koala Kids has significantly reviewed our way of providing services due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  A major change is the contact points that we have with our young cancer patients and their families.  With no in-hospital visits or services, we began in earnest to collect individual family data which gave us over 130 families with whom we communicate directly and provide in-home services.

This database of families, split 50/50 between older and newer families to our services, provided a perfect opportunity to ask questions about our new way of working.  We wanted to know how families and sick children were coping during COVID, how relevant our in-home services were, what we might do better and how we were being perceived now we were not a part of the in-hospital journey.

Jacqui Louw – MD of IMO Analytics provided her pro bono services to create a quantitative survey and provide analysis and a report of the results.  84 families took the time during COVID lockdown to respond, giving us a 75% response rate.

The findings are clear that during the pandemic as many as two thirds of parents and 45% of children suffered increased stress levels.  For children these stresses included fear of contracting the virus, limits on hospital visitors and isolation from a ‘cancer normal’ social life.

The situation has been particularly stressful for mothers, with two thirds reporting feeling much more stressed and respondents averaging a rating of 8.8 on a stress scale of 0 to 10. The stresses for carers centred around hygiene needs and risks, isolation from families and regular helpers, not interacting directly with medical staff and splitting immediate family to operate within required hospital protocols.

The biggest challenge for families was described as maintaining a strong family environment. Parents spoke of having to be alone, feel alone, make decisions alone, make arrangements to physically cope alone, all while knowing that the other part of their family is similarly operating alone somewhere else.

The pandemic at its height changed care routines, with one third of families attending hospital less frequently, seven per cent attending more frequently and 11 per cent not attending in-hospital care at all.   Hospitals were also reported as feeling purely clinical with less fun and distractions.

Koala Kids’ in-home services have rated very positively . Parents indicated that during lockdown family meal boxes, hand sanitiser and masks, themed craft activities, customised toy and activity packs were most useful while interactive zoom sessions and activity packs for Mother’s and Father’s Day, AFL finals and Halloween were the most fun.

More than 60 per cent of parents strongly agree the Koala Kids’ in-home support is an important part of their child’s cancer treatment. Almost 70 per cent strongly agree the support is beneficial and fun, at least two thirds strongly agree it is useful for the whole family, and more than 60 per cent feel strongly that these types of in-home services should continue after the pandemic.

Koala Kids brand and purpose was clearly understood. The word ‘happiness’ was the highest scoring in a series of 34 words presented to respondents to rate when thinking about Koala Kids.  All parents felt that Koala Kids clearly understands that sick children still need to have fun, 81% of parents strongly feel that Koala Kids understands the power of distraction and comfort for kids during treatment, that we bring happy moments to their child and family and that we deliver what we say we will.  One of our respondents put it this way….. “You bring joy to kids’ lives who are going through such a horrible illness. Those little gifts can make a child’s treatment day easier to cope with and often a great distraction”

We remain committed to ensuring we continue to provide the most relevant in-home and in-hospital services as COVID rules and regulations allow.  We are delighted we have been able to maintain such a strong connection to children and families undergoing cancer treatment.

NEW LOOK LUNCH

Even the pandemic didn’t prevent Koala Kids annual lunch from going ahead in 2020. Though the event was hosted quite differently given the restrictions.

Whereas we annually host a sell-out event at Quat Quatta, Ripponlea, given COVID-19 restrictions this year, 15 women hosted a total of 192 girlfriends and supporters to fabulous Summer lunches in their own dining rooms.

Held over two consecutive, sunny Thursdays in early December everyone took the opportunity to make-up, dress up and enjoy catching up after most having not seen each other for the greater part of the year. Some guests attended a lunch each week and Mandy Mandie hosted two lunches. As well as having a great time with most of the hostesses and many guests feeding back their preference for the new format, we raised a profit of more than $56,000.

We warmly thank our hostesses Kate Spargo, Amanda McPherson, Fiona Prince, Bonnie Clapham. Sue Clemenger, Sue Castan, Pixie Cohen, Fiona Carns, Jane Mandie, Julie Bernard, Sally Cohen, Karen Korn, Rosalie Rosenberg, Katie Rothfield and Mandy Mandie.

Special thanks to Simmons Linen Hire for complimentary napery hire, Frog Hollow Wines, Liberty Belle Skin Centre for the generous guests’ gifts, David Cohen from Mitchells Adventure and ICEE ColdFold boxes for ensuring the meals arrived safely at each home. Thank you also to Dan Lawson and Robbie Connell for photography and videography leading up to and at the event and Purpose Group for technical support.

The fabulous summer lunch was provided by Quat Quatta and orange rose arrangements by The Road Stall.

Australia Day Honour for our inspirational leader Amanda Mandie OAM

Koala Kids executive director Mandy Mandie was recognised for her meritorious service and contribution to children’s cancer in Victoria in the 2021 Australia Day Honours. All involved with Koala Kids are thrilled for Mandy who greatly deserves this award acknowledging her commitment and dedication to making a difference to the lives of children and young people, their families and their healthcare team during cancer treatment.

Mandy, together with her son Nick, founded Koala Kids in 2005 and since then she has established a team of volunteers to manage the governance, fundraising, marketing, public relations, sponsorship, program delivery and administration of the Koala Kids Foundation. Mandy is selfless in her own commitment to volunteering and is an energetic and tireless leader who has inspired hundreds of people to volunteer for Koala Kids and provides mentoring to many young people interested in pursuing voluntary work.

In 2020 Mandy was determined to continue to provide happy moments to children and young people with cancer and adapted the Koala Kids program delivery model to offer activities and meals directly to 120 families in their homes during the Covid-19 pandemic when cancer patients were cut off from normal support services.  Mandy has nurtured meaningful relationships with our major beneficiaries including the Victorian Paediatric Cancer Service, a partnership between the three specialist paediatric cancer service providers; The Royal Children’s Hospital, Monash Children’s Hospital and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

Mandy has extended Koala Kids reach into regional areas of Victoria and Tasmania to ensure the large percentage of children receiving their treatment in regional hospitals were not forgotten. Children and young people with cancer, their families and their healthcare teams now have access to Koala Kids services in nine regional hospitals in Albury Wodonga, Geelong, Frankston, Shepparton, Ballarat, Bendigo, Traralgon, Warrnambool and, Wangaratta plus the Austin Hospital (Olivia Newton John Centre), the Royal Women’s and Royal Melbourne Hospital, Northern and Eastern Health, and Ronald McDonald Houses in Parkville, North Fitzroy, Monash and Hobart.

Many of us have been lucky to witness Mandy’s infectious enthusiasm for Koala Kids and her contribution to children’s cancer support services and we believe if anyone can achieve our vision which is to touch every child and young person with cancer in Victoria it will be Amanda Mandie OAM.
