Koala Kids volunteers provide small things that make a difference for children and young people during cancer treatment, their families and their healthcare teams. Our aim is to touch every person from birth to 25 years during treatment with moments of happiness.

Below are some of our programs which are available to be funded.

SMILEYSCOPE VIRTUAL REALITY GOGGLES

Virtual reality turns procedures usually associated with pain and anxiety into fun for children and young people. Smileyscope also comes with a range of relaxing experiences incorporating evidence-based music therapy. Smileyscope is transforming paediatric paediatric pain practice into fun.

SUPERHERO PROGRAM

Koala Kids Superhero Program includes the choice of a themed sticker chart to count down their treatments, age-relevant resources like books, stickers, games, DVDs and dolls and an end of treatment certificate. Super siblings are also recognized with superhero costumes and certificates.

HOSPITAL COFFEE VOUCHERS

Our volunteers distribute thousands of coffee vouchers each year for tired parents and carers. Not only does this provide a much-needed caffeine hit, but it also allows the parent/carer to spend some time away from the ward in the hospital cafe.

SENSORY ITEMS

Sensory items to help children breathe deeply and provide distraction
during treatment. Used by mental health units, physio, rehabilitation, immunisation and Children's Cancer Centres.

MEAL HAMPER PROGRAM

A weekend's worth of pre-cooked meals plus some basic groceries to provide some relief for 30 families each month struggling to cope with supporting the rest of the family during hospital admissions away from home.

COLOUR-ME-IN PROGRAM

Colouring books and custom produced colour-me items inc backpacks, pencil cases and theatre gowns to distract children during long admissions and treatment sessions. To therapeutically relax young people and
adults in hospital and at home.

LUCKY DIP PROGRAM

Small quality toys and items to incentive and reward children and young people for having their treatment.

COLOUR-IN GINGERBREAD

1,500 novelty shaped gingerbreads with icing for children to decorate after general anaesthetic when they have been fasting.

STORYTIME PODS

A Storytime POD sits in a waiting rooms or ward playroom, ready for children to engage in wholesome, educational entertainment including storytelling and musical videos, digital colouring-in and puzzles to name a few!

HOSPITAL CARE SUPPLIES

Koala Kids Hospital Care Supplies cover a broad range of items that can help make the hospital environment more comfortable for families. Rushed emergency admission, late at night with no cafe open to get food? Families can help themselves to a quick bowl of two-minute noodles from the Koala Kids pantry. Same emergency admission and a parent's phone is about to loose charge? They can access one of the Koala Kids chargers. Toiletries, period care items, basic pantry items, children’s underwear – the list goes on!

SMASH CAKE PROGRAM

Koala Kids aims to provide a chocolate smash cake for every child and young person celebrating their birthday in hospital and at home during cancer treatment. The highly sought after confectionary- filled pinatas come with a rubber mallet, orange flashing glasses and lolly cups and make birthdays particularly special for the children, their families and the staff who care for them. We also provide a smash cake to mark treatment milestones.

THERAPIST SUPPORT

Koala Kids works with child-life, art and music therapists to reduce patient and parent anxiety for ongoing invasive procedures.

Together with these therapists, Koala Kids has developed, sourced and produced a range of essential items which aim to reduce the stress that can be associated with hospitalisation by focusing on developmental, social and emotional wellbeing. These items are neither provided by hospitals nor any other organisations in the paediatric and young people’s cancer space.

THEMED EVENTS

Novelty themed items and activities for children and young people at home and across our entire hospital and family support network to celebrate holidays and cultural events throughout the year i.e. Australia Day, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s & Father’s Days, Easter, Halloween, AFL Finals, Christmas.

NOVELTY NASOGASTRIC TUBE TAPE

Annual supply of fun, novelty nasogastric tube tape for children to choose from.
Includes superheroes and movie characters, AFL teams and more. Children enjoy
choosing their tapes each time.

HAPPY KIT PROGRAM

A number of small, practical and basic items for hospital use are packed into a soft, nylon drawstring bag and given to families in the weeks following their child’s diagnosis. In each Happy Kit is the opportunity for the family to register with Koala Kids Happy Base. Once registered the family can choose from a large number of items, all practical for hospital use, with the hero item of the kit being American Tourister bright orange suitcase. The suitcase was made available thanks to feedback from families that it would be very useful to fill the Koala Kids luggage with the items they like to have on standby for hospital visits.
